Hi All!

I wanted to take this opportunity to share how my leadership training went, as it relates to change and learning agility. Just a quick synopsis- I work for GE-Capital, most of the leaders I train are SME, they are good managers of process, good managers of people, but the leadership area could use some dramatic improvement, particularly when it comes to messaging change and leading through change. I work in a very fast pace, highly-focused, emotionally taxing environment, so by the time people are done with their day, the last thing they want to think about is attending a 2 hour training of mine.  However, I had the opportunity to deliver the training a week or so ago. I started the training with the ball toss exercise, that exercise ran its course for about 20 minutes. Our debrief of the exercise was focused around the different types of change that they experience as a leader ( Development, Transitional, Transformative) and where those type of changes can been seen in the exercise.  Below are the questions that I asked. The first training was very successful. I have another training this coming Monday. I will share with you all how it goes! 

Ball Toss Debrief

  • What role did you take on in keeping the pieces moving and the clients happy?
  • As new things were introduced what changes did you notice
  • What patterns did you recognize throughout the ball toss exercise
  • Now that you have an understanding of developmental, transitional & transformative change, how were those different changes evident in the exercise?
    • What consequence did each type of change present?
    • How does this exercise relate to what you experience as a leader?
    • What have you learned from seeing change from a different perspective

The learning I experienced at the Institute was more broad than the reflection I posted. I want to expand that here. I was heartened to learn that learning agility is a successive ability that builds on previous experience. It helps if learners think in terms of specific areas in which one should try to increase skill in, in order to be more agile. I love how thinking in terms of competing brain function (I'm scared vs. I'm curious) changes the trajectory and can be useful in changing cultures and leadership approach. Finally, the Five Stages of Design Thinking are so applicable to culture building and seeking creative solutions to ordinary issues that plague small businesses.

I've attached a reflection on practice - an exercise I facilitated with members of my Transformation Lab - a creative peer advisory group for business owners that meets every other week for 4 hours. The goal of the group is to change perspective in order to become strong leaders, make more money and lead the life you love. It is a group I co-facilitate with George Berlin, an extraordinary creative genius who helps our members understand themselves as leaders. Please read the attached recap which describes the work we did to better understand agility and how they can use this learning to empower themselves and their teams.
