Abstract
Enhancing learning through community engagement:
Understanding challenges for adult learners

This paper compares adult learners (24+) with younger students on a number of measures of civic participation. Attitudinal and behavioral comparisons are made between groups regarding views on civic participation, promotion of social causes, participation in formal organizations, and overall views of community based service learning experiences. Secondly, student and faculty perspectives on the benefits and barriers of participating in CBSL classes are examined. From our discussions with students and faculty, suggestions for promoting civic engagement projects and the policy implications of this are offered.
